The City of La Mesa is a General Law city consisting of approximately nine square miles of land area. Incorporated in 1912, La Mesa has a 2007 population of 56,250, according to estimates prepared by SANDAG (San Diego Association of Governments).  Since 1990, the average annual rate of population growth has remained relatively consistent, ranging from 0.34% to 0.39%.
