Guy McWhirter has been fortunate to call La Mesa his home for over 50 years. He attended Northmont Elementary School, Parkway Junior High, and Grossmont High School before moving on to College.

After graduating High School, Guy served a two year Mission for his Church in Northern England. Upon returning he went back to College and graduated in 1978. Guy started a small business to help his wife Joan complete nursing school (she now works as a Labor and Delivery Nurse and Sharp-Grossmont hospital). What started as a modest business enterprise expanded to Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Los Angeles and included clients such as Sears, Nevada Power and Light, and Dixieline.

After several years, Guy decided to reduce his business responsibilities to spend more time with his family. In 1990, guy closed down his business and started a Farmers Insurance Agency in Downtown La Mesa. A few years later, he moved the office a few miles east to the corner of La Mesa Blvd and Grossmont Blvd. where the business is still located today and is run by his daughter Amber.

Possessed with a strong desire be active in the community, Guy was appointed to the La Mesa Planning Commission in 1982, where he actively participated before receiving the first of several calls to serve with his church. These calls allowed him to work with the young men and women of La Mesa for over 30 years. Guy’s church service has included a local position to lead one of the local congregations in La Mesa, District Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America, and, most recently, as a congregational leader at San Diego State University for college students and other young single adults. Guy has also served with other organizations including “I Love a Clean San Diego”, San Diego Blood Bank, Red Cross of San Diego and The San Diego Food Bank.

Joan and Guy have been married for over 37 years. They have two daughters and four grand children.

Guy has spent much of his adult life attending to community members and is now looking forward to continuing that service as a member of the La Mesa City Council.
