Environmental Sustainability

The primary role of the Environmental Services Division is to manage the City’s integrated waste management activities, which include solid waste franchise administration and compliance with the CalRecycle requirements for reduction of waste thrown into the landfill. La Mesa has an exclusive franchise agreement with EDCO Disposal Corporation for solid waste disposal and recycling services. Household hazardous waste and electronic and universal waste disposal and recycling are also coordinated through this division.

100% Renewable Electricity Feasibility Study - The cities of La Mesa, Santee, and Chula Vista launched a joint community choice energy (also known as CCA) study to assess the feasibility of each city offering 100% renewable energy to residents and businesses. The final Executive Summary and Study are now available on our CCA page under "City Documents"

FY19-21 CAP Implementation Plan - City Council approved La Mesa's first CAP Implementation Plan. The CAP Implementation Plan was developed as an action plan to outline the near-term activities the City will pursue over the next two years. Learn more on our Climate Action page.

Mandatory Organics Recycling for Businesses - In 2014, Governor Brown signed AB 1826 into law requiring businesses to recycle their organic waste (food waste, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, nonhazardous wood waste, etc.) depending on the amount of waste generated per week. The law phases the requirements and includes more businesses over time so be sure to learn more about the requirements today.
